Designing Teams…with Improv

I know that improv is powerful, and that it is an important life skill.

I believe improv can be a tool to help people experiment with tough interpersonal issues.

I am trying to apply improv games to specific situations to change a groups behavior and interactions.

I did my first prototype yesterday.

I got a really interesting reaction from a very “nice” team that has been neglecting strong emotions to drive their design process.

I had them do the “It’s Tuesday” exercise that allows them to have a huge reaction to a small thing with no relavence.

I watched as a very calm person yelled about a word…for no reason…and the reactions of his teammate who have never seen such a camotion from him.

He was moved by his own reaction to him raising his voice…

I can’t wait to inteview him about his reaction.

lets work from the inside out

I think I’ve finally got it…I might know what I want to do.

I want to help companies have a better culture that fosters innovation, collaboration and a more holistic view of the future.

I can’t think of a product or market I want to work in. It isn’t Apple, Google, GE, facebook, HP, or any other product or service industry. What I care about is that the people in there are being able to utilize their creativity, push the company and grow as humans that recognize the world as something larger than themselves.

That is what I care about. I can finally identify where I want to have impact. The question now is where can I go to do this…is it management consulting? design consutling? is there anyone out there doing what I want to do?

Updated Portfolio

Hey Team-

1) I updated my portfolio on my website so you can see a few projects that came out pretty awesome from last quarter.

www.theorangeengineer.com

Go to Recently Added and let me know what you think.

2) Last quarter was intense. I think I slept a total of 8 hours the entire 10 weeks.

3) This quarter is not so intense. I will blog more, I promise and let me know what stuff you like and what you don’t so that I can make sure I am keeping you updated on what you care about.

4) Next blogs will be dealing more with design and my cross-cultural design class.

Love Danika

Back in the 860

So I made it back to CT safe and sound.

I missed the east coast.
I missed getting flicked off when driving.
I missed the deli at the supermarket.
I missed my moms cooking.
I missed my friends.

I did not miss snow.
I did not miss my fingers being freezing when I’m typing.
I did not miss JFK.
I did not miss having to drive every where.

Regardless. I am happy to be home and look forward to seeing everyone hopefully sooner rather than later.

Festivity, Ceremony, Anger

Festivity, Ceremony, Anger

This a video compilation (its a little furry) of an art60 project I chose to do.

Assignment: Take a simple repeating shape to create 3 compositions that represent festivity, ceremony and anger.

So I took this, did some research and then used a bunch of squares to create a 3D composition that reacted to light. Whats neat is that as the light transveresed over or under or around it, the level of of festivity, ceremony and anger changed.

Check it out, its not the best video (well photography) but it gets my point out to you.

oh yea, if you have any recommendations on sound/music i could add, I would love to hear it.

Scrapbook Mania

Ok…so it turns out that when given a few days off + a good work space I can stay on top of my scrapbooking.

I am actually scrapbooked up through Portland….um…yea…thats yesterday

If you are anyone who is anyone…you are going to want to see this.

The…Coffee Table

Ok so classes ended…whoa finally.
I owe everyone an update on everything.

Lets just start with ME203….the coffee table.

Yes…i finished it and it totally looks hot.
My welding by the last day was almost non-shilant…
NEXT…aluminum!

Regardless…my table looks great
and although it has a slight moment (much smaller once i tightened all the bolts and added an extra brace) it works surprisingly well. It looks great and if I actually had an ottoman I would get to use it.
Until then….ME203 Final Coffee Table

Coffee Table 1st Assembly

So I finally got the holes drilled, got some great looking socket head cap screws and put my coffee table together for the first time.

I’m feeling…accomplished.

I also ordered my glass and did some practicing in the wood shop for the corner supports for the glass.

I’m really going to wish that I had my ottoman when this is done.

Epic Weekend

I had a great weekend this past weekend. I managed to actually do somethings OTHER than just work.

1) I made polenta and chicken for the first time without my mother. It didn’t quite taste like hers but if I may say so, it was pretty darn good.

Polenta & Chicken

2) I went out in the city! The JPD crew met up at Brian’s house on Potrero Hill and then went out in the Mission bar hopping. I’ve been here for a while and it was awesome to just go out and have some fun and check out a city that I am dying to spend more time in.

ElboRoom

3) Its the 3rd week of November and I spend Sunday at the Beach. Yes, the beach. It was 80, sunny and a perfect 10 for going to Half Moon Bay. For anyone who knows me even a little well you know that the beach is my sanctuary. Sunbathed….and next week I’ll be skiing in Utah with the family.

As Jeremy may say: Best Day Ever…

Still Welding

My welding is coming along awesome. Not perfect…but I am getting so much better. I made the inset for my coffee table. It looks pretty awesome. I’m happy. 56 inches of welding and I only burnt a hole through once.

Yay Building Stuff!
